The FAOSTAT Pesticide Usage Database has updated pesticide usage data for various countries, covering the use and export of pesticide active ingredients and major pesticide categories in different regions and major countries from 1990 to 2022. The database shows that in 2022, the total use of agricultural pesticides worldwide was 3.7 million tons (converted to active ingredients), an increase of 4% from 2021 and 13% from 10 years ago, which is twice as much as in 1990; The average usage of agricultural pesticides is 2.38 kilograms per hectare, an increase of 3% compared to 2021; The total export volume of pesticides decreased by 1% compared to 2021, with approximately 6.9 million tons of formulated products.
In 2022, the total global use of agricultural pesticides was 3.7 million tons (converted to active ingredients), an increase of 4% compared to 2021, a 13% increase from 10 years ago, and twice as much as in 1990. Compared to the 1990s, the use of herbicides has increased by 121%, fungicides by 54%, and insecticides by 48% globally in the past decade. During this period, the structure of pesticide use categories also changed, with the proportion of herbicide use increasing from 40% to 50%, while the proportion of insecticides decreased from 26% to 22%, and the proportion of fungicides decreased from 25% to 22%.
The average usage of pesticides also varies over time. In 2022, the average use of pesticides on arable land was 2.38 kilograms per hectare, an increase of 3% compared to 2021; The value in agricultural production is 0.90 kilograms per thousand US dollars, an increase of 2%; The per capita usage is 0.46 kilograms per person, an increase of 2%. From 1990 to 2022, these indicators have increased by 94%, 5%, and 35% respectively.
In 2022, Brazil is the world's largest pesticide user, with a usage of 801000 tons of agricultural pesticides. This is about 70% higher than the second ranked United States' 468000 tons. The next three countries are Indonesia's 295000 tons, Argentina's 263000 tons, and China's 236000 tons, with similar usage levels. The next five countries are Vietnam (162000 tons), Canada (98000 tons), the Russian Federation (97000 tons), Colombia (78000 tons), and France (69000 tons).
In 2022, the total export volume of pesticides decreased by 1% compared to 2021, with approximately 6.9 million tons of formulated products, but its export value increased by 13%, reaching 48.8 billion US dollars. Between 2013 and 2022, the export volume of pesticides increased by 50%, and their export value increased by 53%.
In 2022, Asia will be the largest pesticide exporting region, with export volume and value of 3.5 million tons and 21.7 billion US dollars respectively. However, considering that Asia exports to other regions, the export volume and value will be 2.3 million tons and 15.3 billion US dollars respectively. Most of Africa's pesticide imports come from countries outside of Africa, while the majority of exported pesticides still go to African destinations.
