Ukraine will comprehensively revise its legislation on genetically modified crops

Release time:2022-10-31

On October 20, the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine said that it planned to amend the legislation to deal with the growing illegal GM crop market, but it has not yet decided whether to tighten or relax the ban.

Ukraine is a major exporter of agricultural products in the world and currently prohibits the cultivation of genetically modified crops. If its GM policy changes, it may affect the export to countries where GM products are prohibited.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine said in a statement that in 2007 Ukraine passed a law on genetically modified organisms, but it did not contain a control mechanism and there were inconsistencies. In terms of law, Ukraine has no genetically modified crops, because the law prohibits the production, cultivation and consumption of genetically modified products; However, in recent years, Ukraine has formed a shadow market for genetically modified products, which has led to the violation of the interests and rights of consumers, because consumers do not know whether the products they consume contain genetically modified ingredients; It also threatens Ukraine's reputation and status as a major exporter of agricultural products.

Taras Visotsky, the first deputy minister of the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine, said that the new legislation must be more clear, and everyone must understand the rules for testing, impact and threat assessment of genetically modified organisms.
